Today marks the 5 year anniversary of Truveta. I personally am so humbled by where we are today.
As I reflect back to where we were in 2020, the world was a very different place. It was a time of great uncertainty. The world was desperate for answers to a pandemic that we knew nothing about. Patients were waiting. Families were afraid. And the truth was clear—our healthcare data was too fragmented, too messy, and too hidden to help when it mattered most. Answers to the most pressing questions about therapies and care were taking an average of 17 years to reach patients. That’s unacceptable.
In just five years, health systems and life science partners have come together working towards a bold vision: Saving Lives with Data. They believe patients deserve better. They believe that by uniting, they can break down the silos that had held back healthcare for too long.
We’ve gone from an idea born in a pandemic to building the most complete, timely, and representative dataset in US healthcare history. Truveta Data now represents more than 120 million patients—one in three Americans—whose care is delivered across more than 20,000 clinics and 900 hospitals.
Through the power of AI—and our Truveta Language Model—we’ve transformed trillions of unstructured, messy data points into clarity. Diagnoses, lab results, medications, procedures, outcomes, and the tiniest details captured in clinical notes are now discoverable in ways that have never before been possible. And when combined with closed claims, mortality data, and social drivers of health, this community has built something the world has never seen: a living, learning system of American healthcare.
The result? In just five years, Truveta has already changed how medicine is studied:
- Researchers delivered the first real-world comparison of semaglutide (Ozempic) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro), influencing how clinicians and patients think about obesity care.
- We’ve helped Boston Scientific reimagine treatment pathways for patients with pulmonary embolism and peripheral artery disease, advancing device innovation.
- We’ve worked with Pfizer to accelerate the development and delivery of COVID-19 treatments and vaccines, contributing to a once-in-a-generation public health effort.
- We’ve supported the CDC in real-time monitoring of respiratory viruses, maternal outcomes, and pediatric care—helping safeguard communities across the nation.
And these are just a few of the hundreds of studies across the most common and rarest conditions already available because of Truveta Data.
But these are not just studies. They are proof of what becomes possible when health systems unite, when data is unlocked, and when AI is applied responsibly. Every data point represents a patient, a family, a story, and each discovery is a glimpse into a future where care is faster, safer, and more equitable.
This is why we do the work we do.
Looking ahead
Bill Gates once said that people overestimate what they can achieve in three years but underestimate what they can achieve in ten. Looking back, I see how true that is for Truveta. In five short years, we’ve built something extraordinary together. And yet, I know we’ve only just scratched the surface.
The next decade will be bold. AI is rewriting what’s possible across every industry—but nowhere is the potential greater than in healthcare.
Imagine detecting disease before symptoms even appear.
Imagine discovering cures that once felt out of reach.
Imagine precision medicine not as a privilege, but as the standard for every patient.
This is the future we are building. With Truveta and the power of AI, entire organizations can learn faster, ask more, and accelerate breakthroughs. The Truveta Genome Project will bring together real-world data and genetics to unlock the next generation of therapies and realize the power of precision medicine. And with the collective strength of our health system members and partners, we can continue to fulfill our mission: Saving Lives with Data.
A thank you
To our health system members, life science and government partners, and the entire Truveta team—you are the reason this vision is alive. What we’ve achieved together in five years inspires me. What we will achieve in the next ten excites me even more.
Because this is only the beginning. And I can’t wait to see what we learn—and whose lives we save—together.
