CGM use associated with lower risk of death and cardiovascular events in adults with type 2 diabetes

by | Oct 19, 2026

  • A study presented at EASD 2026 used Truveta Data to examine mortality and cardiovascular outcomes among nearly 28,000 adults with type 2 diabetes on basal insulin.
  • CGM use was associated with a 45% lower risk of death at one year and a 36% lower risk of death at two years compared with non-users.
  • Researchers also found lower risks of cardiovascular events, including heart attack, stroke, peripheral artery disease, and heart failure hospitalization.

As continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) use expands among people with type 2 diabetes, researchers are increasingly exploring its association with outcomes beyond glucose control. A study presented at the 2026 European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) Annual Meeting used Truveta Data to evaluate long-term outcomes among nearly 28,000 adults with type 2 diabetes receiving basal insulin therapy.

Using longitudinal electronic health record (EHR) and mortality data, researchers conducted a target trial emulation comparing outcomes between CGM users and non-users.

CGM use was associated with lower mortality and fewer cardiovascular events

At one year, CGM users had a 45% lower risk of death from any cause compared with people who did not use CGM. At two years, the risk remained 36% lower.

Researchers also found lower risks of cardiovascular events, including heart attack, stroke, peripheral artery disease, and heart failure hospitalization. Heart failure hospitalizations were approximately half as common among CGM users at both one and two years.

Because this was an observational study, the findings show an association and cannot determine whether CGM directly caused the lower rates of death or cardiovascular events.
